Brass instructor and Sacramento native, Jared earned a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies (Cum Laude) from Sacramento State University (CSUS) and is currently undertaking his Masters Degree in Music Performance with jazz emphasis, also at CSUS. He began playing trumpet and studying brass technique in the 5th grade. By the 8th grade he was a paid professional musician performing in pit orchestras for different musical theater companies in the Sacramento and Davis areas, in addition to performing regularly in jazz festivals on the West Coast thanks to a local youth jazz education group known as the Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society (STJS).
In high school Jared had the opportunity to receive instruction from world class arrangers and composers including Johan de Meij, Jan Van der Roost, Robert W. Smith, Jim Cullum, Bob Curnow, Jim Widner, and Gordon Goodwin. Other world class artists Jared has had the opportunity to learn from and perform with include Gary Foster, Mel Martin, Christian McBride, Conrad Herwig, Dave Brubeck, Mark Elf, Carl Allen, Wycliffe Gordon, Louie Bellson, Ndugu Chancler, ‘Fast” Eddie Erickson, and other talented musicians and educators. Jared is highly passionate about teaching, music, jazz, brass instruments, and sharing his musical knowledge. He teaches privately at Kris Tague’s store, Tague’s Band Instrument Repair Services.
As a band leader Jared has directed and performed with student ensembles and professional community ensembles since his sophomore year in high school. Representing American River College in CSUS’ Youth Traditional Jazz Band Festival (YTJBF), his ensemble earned recognition as the top college group and individual band members received best trombone, drums, bass/tuba and trumpet awards from) – Jared was also the recipient of the Kenton O. Smith Traditional Jazz Scholarship for Most Outstanding College Musician (2011 and 2013). Professional community ensembles include a traditional jazz/swing band, Over Forte, and a 9-piece small ‘big’ band group, The Nostalgics Dance Band, Swing Masters, and a soul/funk band Souled Out.
