Tom Phillips – Guitar Instructor
Rock. Blues, Classical, Jazz and Country
Tom also enjoys teaching slack key guitar and ukulele.
Tom Phillips has been teaching guitar for over forty years. He spent the first twenty five years learning and teaching with the great jazz mandolinist Tiny Moore. Tom also studied classical guitar with Cuban guitarist Rey de la Torre and was his assistant instructor at the Music and Arts Institute of San Francisco. He graduated from CSUS in 1971 and was the first person to graduate as a guitar major. In the 70’s, with the country rock band Redwing, Tom recorded five albums for Fantasy Records and toured Europe three times. In 1981 he won the California State Flatpicking Championship. Since 1984, Tom has been playing in Avalon Swing, a jazz combo that has recorded five CD’s. For the past thirty-five years he has been playing for Music Circus and the Broadway productions at the community center. Tom’s favorite style is fingerpicking in the Chet Atkins tradition.
Most of Tom’s students are interested in learning how to improvise in rock or jazz, but he also enjoys teaching beginners the basics.
