Originally from the Washington D.C. area, New York-based drummer Rob Mitzner has recorded for Billboard Top-10 charting albums and films, recently appearing on NBC’s LATE NIGHT WITH SETH MEYERS as the guest drummer with the 8G Band. He is the author of the Amazon best-selling book Drumming in a Band: Stuff You Can Use (Hudson Music) and its sequel, Drumming from A to Z: MORE Stuff You Can Use (Hudson Music).
His first drum teacher was Steve “Freelance” Larrance, who taught him that the drummer “drives the bus.” After high school, he attended Brown University in Providence, RI, graduating with B.A. in music and Political Science. While in college, he began studying with Bob Gullotti, who taught him the importance of melody on the drums. After graduating, he moved to Boston to begin a professional career, working with artists like Jerry Bergonzi, Bruce Gertz, Sam Kininger and Andrea Capozzoli. He then relocated to New York, where he got to play a different style of music with an awesome band nearly every night.
This musical versatility has taken him around the world playing jazz, rock, pop, hip-hop, country and R&B, gracing stages from Lincoln Center to Caesar’s Palace. He has been featured as a both a player and a writer in publications such as DownBeat Magazine, Modern Drummer and Drumeo and proudly endorses Yamaha Drums, Paiste Cymbals, Vic Firth Sticks, Remo heads and Low Boy Custom Beaters.
He has served as a guest lecturer and clinician at NYU’s Clive Davis Institute, The Percussive Arts Society (PASIC), Albright College and The Delaware Drum Show. When he’s not performing or doing masterclasses, Rob runs C-Room Studio in Brooklyn where he records remote tracks for artists across the world, writes articles for music publications and drinks way too much coffee.
