Bio

Jon Bafus has studied drumming for over 30 years. In addition to teaching for 15 years, he is an active performer, composer, and bandleader.  Growing up in the Sierra foothills, Jon learned music from a young age with years of private lessons and school band. 

After graduating from UC Davis in 2006 with studies in music and fine arts, he settled in Sacramento where he performs and records in many projects, spanning a range of eclectic styles.  Jon leads his own experimental rock band, Gentleman Surfer, as well as collaborating with a wide range of players in the Jazz and Avant Garde music scenes in Sacramento and the Bay Area.

He has toured extensively, in the US and oversees, performed at a number of notable festivals, and played on at least 46 albums and EPs.  Jon’s open minded approach caters to each student’s individual learning style and goals, to help get the most out of their learning experience. Jon’s teaching focuses on fundamentals and technique, playing styles, groove and feel, reading and writing music, music theory, ergonomics, deep listening, constructing drum parts, how to practice, and developing a healthy discipline with your instrument.
